Hahnemühle Sumi-E Paper is designed specifically for Japanese Sumi-E ink painting, brush painting and traditional calligraphy. It is also used for printmaking. Its highly absorbent surface and natural white colour provide a setting for expressive brushwork, from flowing lines to bold, rapidly executed strokes.

Sumi-E is an ink-painting tradition with roots in Chinese brush painting and calligraphy, later developed in Japan. Often taking its subjects from nature, it combines simplicity of composition with powerful, expressive lines. Rather than describing every detail, the brushwork captures the character of a subject with a few considered marks.

This emphasis on simplicity and deliberate brushwork makes Sumi-E a thoughtful approach to painting, whether you are practising traditional techniques, exploring nature-inspired compositions or taking time for a focused creative session.

At 80gsm, these lightweight sheets offer a generous 50 × 65cm working area for painting, printmaking and calligraphy practice. Choose from four pack sizes to suit occasional studies or regular studio use.

Sumi-E paper has been used for generations to produce impactful and energetic pieces of work. Often used to capture nature and natural phenomena, brush strokes are expressive and swift and aim to produce a feeling of patience and inner harmony. The paper itself is designed explicitly with this medium in mind and would not work very well with other techniques.
