The paper used for charcoal and pastels are rough in texture, this is so the granules created when using these mediums can catch onto something. The paper is bumpy and snake-like. One thing to note is that unlike other mediums, if you want to have a paper that really utilises charcoal and pastel it has to be a specific paper. Something that is heavy in weight (360gsm or over) with a rough surface is definitely needed for professional pieces. For sketching and practicing, a lighter weight or mixed media pad could be used with a fixative added at the end to protect the work.
